The route from Athens to Sparta via the national roads is pleasant and straightforward. You can either take the newly completed Athens-Kalamata motorway, or turn right before Tripoli at the Tegea/Sparta exit and follow the old national road. From Sparta to Monemvasia, the local roads are clearly signposted and pass through the beautiful landscapes of the Laconia region. In addition to a private car, you may also travel to Monemvasia on the national coach service (KTEL) from Kifissos Station in Athens, or hire a taxi. Upon arriving in Monemvasia, you will drive through the new village and continue on the same road towards the rock, crossing over the bridge. This road leads to the Castle entrance. Cars are prohibited within the Castle of Monemvasia, which is only accessible to pedestrians, so it is best to drive up to the entrance, drop off your passenger and luggage, and park your car along the road. This is the only parking solution near the Castle; it is free, but finding a spot close to the Castle Gate is a matter of luck. Alternatively, you could park in the new village, where parking spaces are not as limited, and take the minibus which serves the Castle at around half-hour intervals. You will find the bus stop by the town’s only kiosk, at the start of the bridge.

After entering the Castle, you can reach the hotel by following signs to “Theophano Art Hotel”. Once you pass through the Gate and find yourselves on the central alley, you will see a path on your right, and a “Theophano Art Hotel” sign; follow the path downwards, looking out for further signage along the way, that will lead you to the hotel. The journey will take you about 10 minutes. The Theophano Art Hotel is located on Chrysafitissa Square, in front of the walls facing out to the sea, in the southern part of the settlement.

If you have much or heavy luggage, you can use one of the porters who serve the Castle, for a tip starting at 5 euro. When they are available, the porters wait at the Castle Gate with their trolleys. Their working hours are usually early in the morning until the late afternoon.
